Students from our class were invited to attend a workshop, along with other health care providers, on how to perform certain procedures. . . And let me tell you, Ultrasound is everything 👏👏 Yup!! We are 2 first generation Latino Medical students breaking barriers. . . . all while doing it alongside each other as boyfriend & girlfriend. Altough, not physically because we are long distance right now 🥲 but we make it work! We know that there are health disparities for Latinos in the US. But even this statement is complex because within Latino Health, we can categorize health outcomes between those born in the US/first generation (US-born) and Latinos who immigrated to the US (foreign-born). Thankful! For my family & to be done with Renal (for now) ✅️ My weekend vibes 🎵🎶 Hello Friends!! I was offline this past weekend in preparation for my respiratory final on Monday. On Tuesday, I started my Renal block!! 🤯 My curriculum has a week built in after a final that allows students to wind down & have a change of pace from new material. So its like a break because we have no new didactic material even though we still have other courses to attend. But for this block, there was no "break." We went straight into renal the very next day 🥲! So I'm barely catching my breath after the final, after decompressing with friends, and getting back into a routine. If anyone has advice for renal, lmk!! 😂 Happy Friday & Happy International Women's Day! Part 2: Hypertension or High Blood Pressure is a multifactorial condition, meaning it's not one cause but multiple factors that contribute to high blood pressure. Besides the physiological factors and the health disparities we see with other vulnerable populations, living as a Black person in the US is also a factor. I took a class called "Medicine in the American South" during my undergrad years & the slavery hypothesis was one of the topics that we discussed. Slaveowners & Pro-slavery thinkers really tried to use science to distinguish themselves from African slaves in so many ways. Over time, this same kind of thinking bled through into scientific research when researchers were trying to investigate the high rates of high blood pressure in African Americans (around the 1980s). They came up with "The Slavery Hypothesis for Hypertension" insinuating that it was all genetic and an adapted trait from salt-deficiency that traced back to their African roots. WILD. I know!!!! Thankfully, the scientific community did some peer reviewing and shut down that hypothesis in the 1990s😤
